In reply to a question by the opposition MP Ahmed Nashid whether joining the Chinese initiative  of Maritime Silk Route would adversely affect the relations with the neighbouring countries, the Foreign Minister Dunya said that Maldives, as an independent and sovereign nation, is not obliged to consult other countries before making foreign policy.

It may be recalled that the Judiciary in Maldives on the eve of the parliamentary polls in March this year framed charges against the Chairman of the Election Commission and his deputy with contempt of court and went on to dismiss them from their jobs.

Maldives: President Yameen Threatens the Opposition on Independence Day

A country that is still struggling with its democratic credentials, it was a surprise to see President Yameen threatening the main opposition for criticising his policies which he says amounts to a threat to Maldivian independence!

One cannot but admire the way former President Gayoom has worked himself up to become the most powerful person in Maldives once again.  Perhaps in the South Asian context there is no political leader who is as wily as Gayoom. In his own subtle and quiet manner he has smoothly regained his former position without creating any major controversy!

Maldives: Gasim’s Jumhooree Party thrown out from the Ruling Coalition:

It was not a surprise that Gasim’s Jumhooree party was removed from the ruling coalition on 28th of May when  Gasim contested for the post of the Speaker of the New Majlis (national parliament) that assembled after the elections.

Maldives and its Judiciary:

On 8th of April, the Maldives Bar Association renewed its call for the suspension of Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed pending investigations into allegations of the judge’s appearance in a series of sex tapes. The Bar contended that Hameed’s presence in the Supreme Court Bench contravenes the Islamic Shariah and the norms of justice. The result is that the Bar Council is itself being de recognised!

Maldives and the Future of the MDP:

A day after the election results to the Majlis were announced, former Nasheed declared that the MDP would need restructuring and a new leadership. The Chairman of the party Reeko Manik resigned from his post over the election debacle and Nasheed has been made ‘acting President’ for the time being.
