Though formal results have not been announced, it looks by all accounts that Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) has swept the polls with over 399 seats in the National Legislature ( Pyidangsu Hluttaw). The Army backed proxy, the USDP is said to have had the worst defeat in the years with hardly 21 seats this time from 45 in the last election.

It turned out that the State Councilor Suu Kyi did not take any Army Representative in her team to the Hague to defend Myanmar’s case in the ICJ despite speculations to the contrary and the Army’s open desire to be included in the team. Perhaps, she wanted to give the impression that she has acted on her own and not at the insistence of the Army.

It all began with Gambia on behalf of the OIC filed a Law suit at the United Nation’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Myanmar of breaching the 1948 Un Genocide Convention through a military campaign in Rakhine State. The ICJ with great alacrity took up the issue immediately and fixed December 12th for detailed hearing in the case!

Of late, the media in Myanmar is full of articles of possible Coup, failure of the Government, the international pressure on the Rohingya Issue and consequent bad relations between the Tatmadaw and the Civilian Government. The inference being made out is that if the Government does not act, the possibility of a coup cannot be ruled out!

By Dr. S. Chandrasekharan
The Myanmar Government appears to be coming under a siege mainly by the international organizations and some western countries. If their idea is to throw Myanmar back into the arms of the Chinese, they are perhaps already succeeding. Even if the Government and the people want to get out of the stranglehold of China, the mission of these agencies is to ensure that it does not happen.
