Elections to the Local councils took place on Jan 18 and the results announced indicate that there has been no significant shift in the loyalties of the people from that of the Presidential elections.

In settling down, it was expected that President Yameen would face many challenges. For him the first and foremost would be to get along with other coalition partners, particularly with the Jumhooree party but for whose support he would not be in the Presidential chair.

Soon after he took over, the first thing President Yameen did was to take a swipe at the losing candidate Mohamed Nasheed, by declaring that “People have proved that they do not want a puppet of foreign powers.”
Better sense prevailed and soon he quickly made some conciliatory gestures to make up for that indiscreet statement.

Though not totally unexpected, Maldives threw a surprise in electing Abdullah Yameen in the run off to the presidential elections held on November 16, 2013.
The elections saw an unprecedented polling of close to 90.3 percent with the PPM candidate Abdulla Yameen securing 110,371 votes ( 51.61 percent) as against Mohamad Nasheed of MDP gathering 48.39 percent with 103,500 votes.

It was a sad day for democracy in Maldives when the Supreme Court without much of a hearing or discussion of legal issues, annulled the resolution of Majlis ( Parliament) of the Speaker taking over the interim administration on 11th of November in the absence of an elected President and until a new incumbent is elected.

Recent Developments in Maldives seem to have upset the international community and rightly so. When all the international observers termed the first and now annulled elections of September 7 as fair and credible, the Supreme Court took the extreme step of not only annulling the elections, but also giving specific guide lines to another constitutional body- here the Election Commission as to how the election should be conducted.

Strange it may sound, but it is true! -the Police in Maldives unilaterally prevented the Election Commission from conducting fresh elections on the 19th this month on the ground that it was being held in contravention of the Supreme Court verdict and the guide lines issued.
