Will anyone believe that the highest court in Maldives has met three times at midnight in the last three weeks to give executive directions to the Elections Commission in the conduct of the presidential elections?

After two postponements in the same day ( 7 September), the Supreme Court of Maldives, finally announced its verdict, annulling the first round of Presidential Elections.

As expected, developments since the first round of elections that went off smoothly have been very disturbing. The Indian Foreign Minister rightly pointed out that India is “disappointed and distressed” over the situation.

When the initial results of the first round of elections were announced, it was assessed that former president Nasheed will have a tough time in garnering the balance votes to reach the 50 percent margin. The reason was that all the other candidates had literally "ganged up " to ensure the defeat of Nasheed.

In his first response to the results of the first round of elections, Nasheed of MDP declared that the party has resumed the campaign activities to garner some “few thousand” additional votes to guarantee a win in the second round.
In another connection, the party members indicated that an additional 2 to 3 thousand votes would make the difference.

Though the results of the Presidential Elections have not been formally announced, it is seen that Nasheed of the MDP obtained 95,224 votes out of 211850 votes polled. This comes to 45.45 percent and thus short of a fifty percent votes to prevent a runoff.
